Workflows

In its current version, most of the CASCADE is openly and freely available. As a whole the public part of CASCADE can also be accessed online at the Bolin Centre Database.

On this website the public part is accessible without logging in while accessing CASCADE including the data that's not published yet is restricted to logged in users.

Members of the steering group behind CASCADE, called editors, are in charge of importing new and complementing proposed datasets.

The workflow to extract a customized subset of data from CASCADE is as follows:

  1. Make selection of content included in the output
  2. Make restrictions on data fields
  3. Manually preview the output using the Arctic Ocean map with superimposed sample locations, the customizable chart plot, and the data table preview; adjust 1. and 2. as needed
  4. Select a convenient output format
  5. Download the data file

The workflow to import a dataset into CASCADE is as follows (only for editors):

  1. Contribution is in form of a filled out xlsx template
  2. Upload and consistency check (minimal set of required fields/columns, all field/column names and data types)
  3. Content check if new/redundant/complementing/contradicting
    • new means that metadata (i.e., location and time) and data (e.g., various concentrations in sample) don't exist yet in database at all
    • redundant means at the same location (5km tolerance) and at the same time (1y tolerance) and all data to be imported exists in database already
    • complementing means the same as redundant but not all data to be imported exists in database
    • contradicting means the same as redundant with at least one data entry being different than the respective entry in database
    • a dataset to be imported can be partially redundant, complementing, and contradicting at the same time
  4. Highlight findings that need fixing with font color or cell fill color; repeat from step 1 with fixed file to enforce thorough handling
  5. Upload possibility (=button) only available when no problems with dataset, automatically the editor name, current date, and marginal sea names are added
